Columbus Day is over for another year. In fact, it's somewhat of a non-holiday these days. Sure, there is a holiday in the explorer's honor, but it's no longer October 12. It's now the second Monday in October, and I'm sure school kids don't spend time drawing pictures of the Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria. I recently discovered that New York City's Columbus Circle was named for Christopher Columbus. All the times I've walked through or past the famous traffic circle, I had no idea the guy at the top of the column was indeed Mr. Columbus.

According to legend, Genghis Khan lies buried somewhere beneath the dusty steppe of Northeastern Mongolia, entombed in a spot so secretive that anyone who made the mistake of encountering his funeral procession was executed on the spot. Once he was below ground, his men brought in horses to trample evidence of his grave, and just to be absolutely sure he would never be found, they diverted a river to flow over their leader's final resting place.

A decade ago, it was a clever novelty: a webcam pointed at an office water cooler. The first one is still online, at www.coolercam.com, broadcasting a fresh picture every 10 seconds. But in the succeeding decade, webcams have grown from a techie novelty to a way of life for some people -- some of whom have evidently overdosed on them. As for the cooler camera, "Way back then, it got a lot of hits, but the counter has not gone up hugely in the last couple of years," said Ryan Wilson, manager at Interactive Market Systems, the water cooler's home. Located in Sandy, Utah, the firm provides statistical analysis for marketers. "There used to be a Web ring of cooler cams, but that has all gone away," he said.

The Guardian - September 10, 2008

Early tomorrow, hundreds of relatives of those who died on September 11 2001 will gather at Ground Zero to participate in a minute's silence for each of the twin towers at the moment they fell, and to listen to the names of all 2,751 World Trade Centre victims being read out. They will be joined by Barack Obama and John McCain, who have agreed to suspend their presidential tussle for the day. Shortly before 9am, as the victims' families descend into the pit left by the fallen towers, an unintended consequence of the commemoration will be that it will refocus the world's attention on the apparent snail's pace of the reconstruction of the site. Seven years on from the events of 9/11, the rebuilding of Ground Zero remains mired in bureaucratic wrangling, cost overruns and delays.

That moment in time has become this generation's Dealey Plaza, or perhaps Lorraine Motel — an instant rife with emotions like anger and horror that crosses cultural and ethnic lines.

Once upon a time, there was a novel, a film and a Broadway musical called A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. (Google it if you need verification.) And we have the start of the same kind of far-reaching phenomena here with "An Arena Grows in Orlando." If you don't believe me, go to OrlandoEventsCenter.com and watch it grow. OK, there hasn't been much aboveground work yet, but the site has fascinating drawings and a lot of information. It also has an EarthCam system that allows you to view the construction. And it includes a streamed time-lapse movie from start to eventual finish. Granted, when I look at it now, all I see is one small building and four trees disappearing. Orlando Magic COO Alex Martins sees so much more. "I see the future," he said Monday. "And that EarthCam is going to allow all of us to see that future rise out of the ground."

Victoria Skimboards recently introduced the "Vic Cam," a video camera that provides live footage of Aliso Beach on the company’s website. The purpose of the camera is to allow skimboarders to view weather and ocean conditions without physically going to the beach, General Manager of Victoria’s Trigg Garner said. He said the camera was installed less than three weeks ago, but the site has already received a multitude of hits. Aliso’s topography makes it one of the most popular skimboarding locations around. “It’s a world-renowned spot,” Garner said. “The mountains drop into the water, which creates a shore break perfect for skimboarding. The cove sets a lot of different swell directions too.” The Vic Cam is the first video camera dedicated to skimboarding. And these innovators are not giving away their secret location. “It’s a test project for the whole industry,” Garner said. The company plans to launch the camera on earthcam.com in the near future, which will expand the view to all beachgoers, not just skimboarders.

Do you sometimes wish you could see what was happening on the other side of the world, check the night scene in Times Square or see if astronauts really float inside the space shuttle? By pointing your browser to the millions of web cameras - or webcams - plugged into the internet all over the planet, you can do that plus check the elephants in Africa, watch cuddly pandas in China, peep into the streets of Moscow and see a true French baker prepare his daily bread in Paris. Such cameras, though not always reliable because of their varied locations, time differences and broadband connection speeds at both ends, give us a small window to the world. Often, they are part of research projects or surveillance operations; others belong to companies counting on a nifty marketing tool to promote their product or travel destination. Sometimes they allow private citizens to show their families what life is like in their new country.

It's tough to take a Carnegie Hall concert for granted, especially on your first visit as an audience member. The sense of history and prestige of the place wash over you as you sit in the hall, which is so surprisingly bright and fresh that it’s easy to forget it’s more than 100 years old. We've heard the continuing bad news about the ruined architecture and neighborhoods of New Orleans, so we can turn with relief to This Old House at 10:30 a.m. Sunday on PBS' WNEO/WEAO (Channels 45/49) for the second project of the 2008 season, This Old House Helps New Orleans Rebuild. This promises to be an inspiring project. Encompassing 10 shows, it covers: the restoration of a damaged circa 1892 Creole-style shotgun single house in the Lower Ninth Ward; another shotgun house in another neighborhood restored through private efforts; other recovery efforts happening throughout the city, including the restoration of a house for an owner in a wheelchair done for free by volunteers; the creation of Musicians' Village, conceived by famed saxophonist Branford Marsalis and musician, composer and actor Harry Connick Jr. in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. A shotgun-style house features a long, narrow building with rooms one behind the other.
